Rebel lifestyle:
Always the rebel, Hunter was a self-confessed drug and alcohol user. Although he had a son, Juan, with wife Sandra Conklin in 1964, drugs and alcohol binges led to the couple suffering three miscarriages and two still births through their 17 year marriage.
Professionally, however, he was making a name for himself as part of the ‘new journalism’ movement of the 1960s. In 1965 Hunter was commissioned to write an article for The Nation about his year spent living with the Hell’s Angels motorcycle gang. The resulting book, Hell’s Angels (1966) was a smash and Hunter, with his trademark Hawaiian shirts, aviator glasses and cigarette holder, gained notoriety.
