Dr Gonzo:

Hunter reached the peak of his career in the 1970s as one of the linchpin writers of Rolling Stone Magazine. His 1971 classic book, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was first serialised in the magazine. The book blurs fact and fiction in its account of his drug-fuelled trip to cover an anti-drugs conference. He dubbed his style of cynical, wild, semi-autobiographic writing ‘Gonzo journalism’, after Dr Gonzo, a character in the book.

Always willing to shake up the political landscape, he followed with Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail (1971), in which he fiercely criticised Richard Nixon’s election campaign.
