ACE Vitamins

Step up your intake of vitamins A, C and E, which have the power to boost the immune system and limit the damage done by free radicals, unstable molecules produced by the body. They can trigger degenerative conditions, like heart disease and cancers.

Free radicals are unstable molecules produced as by-products of normal body metabolism. These free radicals attack other cells and can cause cancer. A healthy body will not be affected, however, poor diet, pollution and disease can leave the body vulnerable. Vitamins A,C and E are antioxidants which stabilise free radicals and boost the immune system.

Vitamin A (beta-carotene)
Necessary for healthy skin, sight and immune system, beta-carotene protects against degenerative diseases including cancers.

Good sources are retinol from dairy products cheese, butter and margarine, egg yolks, oily fish. Beta-carotene from orange and yellow fruits and vegetables, eg carrots, mango, apricots, sweet potatoes, peppers and leafy vegetables.

A deficiency of vitamin A is signalled by increased infections and poor night vision.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid)
Needed for the production of collagen, the basis of healthy gums, teeth, bones and skin. Its antioxidant properties may protect against heart disease and cancers.

Found in fruits especially citrus fruits, vegetables, tomatoes, broccoli, watercress, peppers, berries, and kiwis.

Lack of vitamin C in the diet can cause poor wound healing, reduced resistance to infection, bleeding gums and aching joints.

Vitamin E (Tochopherol)
As an antioxidant this prevents free radical damage and promotes strong cells.

Good sources are vegetable oils (sunflower, corn and olive), wheatgerm, nuts, seeds, spinach and avocadoes.

Deficiency is rare but symptoms like anaemia and nerve damage may be seen in those unable to absorb fat.
