Strong and courageous Heracles was the most popular of all the Greek heroes. Fathered by Zeus and Alcmenes, a Mycenaean princess, Heracles was plagued throughout his life by Zeus’ vengeful wife, Hera. When she visited a fit of madness on him, Heracles murdered his wife and children. Desperate for penance, he faced his famous 12 labours. These involved destroying hideous beasts or retrieving elusive prizes. It was his fortitude that led early Christians to see him as a forerunner of Christ. Heracles died in agony when his third wife, Deianira, gave him a poisoned shirt, believing it would ensure his fidelity. But on his death, he rose to Mount Olympus and became a god.
