The Boeing Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche is the world's most advanced helicopter - a twin-turbine armed reconnaissance rotorcraft. Publicly unveiled in May 1995, it's part of the U.S. military's aviation modernisation programme.
The Comanche's role is to provide armed reconnaissance, light attack and air combat. This is the first time that stealth technology has been utilised in a helicopter.
These stealth characteristics, along with a low radar signature allow the Comanche to enter right into the field of combat practically undetected. With a top speed of 175 knots, this futuristic helicopter has the ability to climb at a rate of 480m per minute, and fly backwards at 70 mph!
The Comanche has advance 'cybernetic' capabilities. In other words, its long-range, high-res sensors generate real-time broad-band information about enemy positions in the battlefield, and relays it to commanders back at base. Eat your heart out Airwolf!
The Comanche won't enter active service until 2006.
