Marking the 25th anniversary of the cease fire, one-off special Falklands: How Close to Defeat?, explores the story of what never happened but what so nearly came to pass: a British defeat by Argentina in the battle for the Falklands. This is the story of one of the great might-have-beens of recent history. For the first time ever, a host of senior British and Argentine combatants will argue and debate the seven critical key steps that could have led to British defeat – the 'what if' moments in which the war was won and lost.
When it began, in April 1982, the outcome of the Falklands War was far from certain. The art of war, someone once said, is to make fewer mistakes than your opponent. And the case of the Falklands certainly proves this point. Just one less mistake by Argentina or one more by Great Britain, might have changed the course of history.
