interactive mapbase camp
Mount Everest is covered with huge glaciers that descend from the main peak and its nearby satellite peaks. The mountain itself is a pyramid-shaped horn. Base camp on the north side is located in Tibet at 17,000 feet/5,180 metres. It takes climbers up to 7 days to trek the Rongbuk Glacier, where expeditions set up a tent city on a gravel plain just below the river of ice. |
