There were three types of dreams: pious dreams, where a god would appear and demand an act of devotion; revelatory dreams that foretold future events, revealed the location of hidden objects or identified a new medicine; and dreams that gave straightforward information, like the best place to put your tomb. Dream temples were devoted to various gods, and anyone could visit them to offer prayers for an answer to a question or a cure for an illness in a dream. Egyptians believed that the interpretation of dreams lay in opposites – so a dream of a death foretells a birth and happiness foretells sadness.
