Scroll depicting Nut & Geb
Nut and Geb

Nut and Geb are portrayed as passionate lovers. During the day they are separated by Shu, the god of air. But at night, Nut comes down to make love to Geb. If storms occurred during the day, Egyptians believed Nut had come closer to earth to meet Geb.

Their love angered Nut’s husband, Re, who decreed she could not give birth during the 360 days of the year. Unhappy Nut asked Thoth, the god of wisdom, to help.

Thoth stole some light from the moon to create five new days (making the year 365 days long) on which Nut bore her five children.
