Anubis was an ancient god, guiding the dead on their path to the underworld long before Osiris became an important deity. However, in mummifying Osiris after his murder, he also became patron saint of embalmers.
Anubis was associated with Ma’at, the goddess of justice. Egyptians believed that when you died, you travelled to the Hall of the Dead. There, Anubis weighed your heart against the feather of Ma’at, steadying the scales first to ensure accuracy. If your heart was heavier than the feather it was eaten by a demon.
