Amun literally means ‘the invisible one’ and there are few stories about him, even though he was considered to be the creator of all things.

Despite his lack of mythological background, he rose to great importance. During the Middle Kingdom, a cult centre to Amun grew up in Thebes (modern Luxor), where he was associated with the sun god Re and worshipped as Amun-Re.

Later, he was favoured by the royal family and, by the 18th dynasty, he outranked all other gods. During this time, a magnificent temple was built to him at Karnak, which still stands today.
