Survival tips for a mudslide

Be aware!

  • Areas that are generally prone to landslide are sites of earlier landslides, the bases of steep slopes, and the bases of drainage channels.
  • Learn to read the signs. Look for patterns of storm-water drainage on slopes, noting especially where runoff water converges. Check hillsides for signs of land movement such as small landslides or progressively tilting trees.

What to do if there's a violent storm:

  • Stay alert and awake – many landside fatalities occur while people are sleeping.
  • Listen to the radio for weather reports. Short, heavy bursts of rain after longer periods of heavy rain are especially dangerous.
  • If you're in a susceptible area, consider leaving if it's safe to do so. But remember that driving during a storm can be risky.
  • Move upstairs
  • Listen for unusual sounds that might indicate moving debris, like trees cracking or boulders knocking together.
  • If you're near a stream or channel, look out for sudden increases or decreases in water flow or a change from clear to muddy water. They may indicate a mudslide upstream so move out of the way!
  • Be especially alert when driving as embankments are particularly susceptible. Watch the roads for collapsed pavement, mud and fallen rocks.

What to do during a landslide:

  • Quickly move out of the path to a stable area
  • If escape is impossible, curl up into a ball and protect your head

What to do after a landslide:

  • Stay away from the area. There may be danger of further movement.
  • Check for injured and trapped people near the slide but without entering the area yourself. Alert rescuers.
  • Help neighbours who need assistance: old people, children and those with disabilities.
  • Listen to the radio or TV for the latest information.
  • Watch out for flooding – it often follows landslides.
  • Watch out for broken services like gas and water pipes – alert the authorities.
  • Check the foundations of your home for damage.
  • Replant damaged ground as soon as possible to avoid erosion which can lead to flash flooding.
