Crimes That Shook The World
Ivan Milat's home
The Backpacker Murderer
The Backpacker Murderer, Ivan Milat, was convicted of the murder of seven backpackers in July 1995. Their bodies were found in Belanglo State Forest, New South Wales, Australia.

The killings occurred throughout the early 90s and were invariably of young travellers from all over the world. The first bodies to be discovered were those of British backpackers Caroline Clarke and Joanna Walters in 1992, followed by a German couple and a young German woman.

In another British link to the case, investigators were contacted from the UK by Paul Onions - a man whom Milat had tried to kidnap some five years beforehand. Onions eventually flew out to Australia to assist in the prosecution which was subsequently boosted by another major tip-off also pointing to Milat. His arrest and the search of his home yielded more evidence including the belongings of some of the victims.

The final analysis, however, has been far from clean-cut. Milat has always protested his innocence and as part of his defence he made accusations against other members of his family, including his brother who had worked with him in chain gangs when they were both in prison.

On top of this, the diverse ways in which his victims were killed has left some people questioning whether or not he carried out the murders alone.
