FACT
Pirates still exist and make thousands of dollars ransoming captured crews.

  • The best time for escape is in the first few moments of the abduction during the confusion. This sounds great in principle but, in reality, you may be too scared and disorientated to act.

  • If you're not numb with shock, try to scream. This isn't to try and attract potential rescuers but simply to alert bystanders to your abduction. Hopefully, they’ll report it to the authorities so they can start their investigation.

  • Kidnappers often drug or beat victims to render them unconscious. Don't struggle or resist. Be calm and compliant.

  • If you are still conscious, try to keep a sense of the distance you've travelled, or memorise noises and smells. If you are lucky enough to get a chance of escape later on, you may be able to lead authorities back to your captors. In reality, escapes are rare but mentally noting your journey does help you regain a sense of control.
