Legend has it that Atlantis was an island, probably somewhere in the Mediterranean, which was destroyed by either an earthquake or a tsunami.
It was first mentioned by the Greek philosopher, Plato, about 2,400 years ago, who said it had been disappeared around 9,000 years before his time. It is said that Atlantis was a land of great beauty, and home to an advanced civilisation with untold wealth.
The romantic image of a fabulous island swallowed up by the sea has meant its location has been sought since Plato’s time although no-one is sure if it even existed at all. Suggested locations for Atlantis have included places as diverse as Switzerland and New Zealand! Some experts think it may actually be the island of Crete.
