On 5 November 1991 Robert Maxwell, the publishing mogul, mysteriously disappeared from his luxury yacht, the Lady Ghislane. His body was later discovered in the Atlantic, off the coast of the Canary Islands.
It seemed that after a few too many drinks, Maxwell simply fell into the water or even that he had committed suicide to escape huge financial worries. But some believe he was pushed into the sea after being drugged.
One theory is that Maxwell was a spy for Mossad (Israel’s intelligence agency) and he was supplying them with information from Downing Street, the White House and the Kremlin. On the night he died he may have met with Mossad on his yacht, asking for money in return for his continuing help and silence.
