Watch them first on Tuesdays at 9pm
Siberia (part 1) Bear Grylls parachutes into the Siberian wilderness, one of the coldest and harshest places on the planet. Bear has to deal with extreme cold as the temperature drops to –40 degrees. He shelters in a cave where he snacks on hibernating mosquito larvae. To speed himself up Bear makes a toboggan from a deer skin. He hitches a ride by leaping onto a freight train heading to the Trans- Siberian railway. Bear also abseils from a helicopter into the immense taiga forest where he builds a storm shelter. In one of his most extreme experiences, Bear swims under the ice of a frozen lake to show just how dangerous it is if you fall through the ice.
Siberia (part 2) In the second episode Bear is in the treacherous Sanyan mountains in Siberia. He leaps from his helicopter into a snow cornice where his survival journey begins. Tackling extreme cold and difficult terrain he meets the Tuvans, a group of yak herders who have lived here for the last 20,000 years. Bear learns how to survive by drinking freshly killed yak blood. He has to skin and eat parts of the yak to keep the bitter cold at bay. He shows how to make a temporary night shelter before bedding down for the night in temperatures that drop below –40 degrees. Using local techniques he catches and eats a squirrel before having to cross a partially frozen river by swimming naked through the icy water.
Alaska Bear Grylls has travelled the Artic and climbed Everest. Now his challenge is the icy peaks of the Chugach Mountains, Alaska, one of the toughest environments on the planet. Each year over one million people visit this wilderness in search of virgin snow to ski, climb and hike. Every year 500 people get lost or stranded. Deliberately putting himself in the position of a stranded skier, Bear uses his specialist survival skills and knowledge to journey across Alaska and shows us how to survive extreme mountain slopes, glaciers tunnels, bear infested forests and treacherous ice floes in a small boat.
Mexico Bear Grylls shows how to survive in Mexico's Copper Canyon. Half a million people visit the canyon every year to see the dramatic landscape and hundreds need to be rescued. Bear demonstrates how to build a simple compass, climb sheer cliffs safely, and use cactus to purify water. For shelter he uses ancient cave dwellings and makes a fire with a traditional 'fire saw'. Bear uses his tried and tested techniques for finding scorpions or grubs and fishing without a rod or line. He even eats special mud that could be the difference between life and death.
