It's time to get into the Christmas spirit with the guys at Orange County Choppers. This year the guys want to do something really special, by creating a bike to deliver some presents to the children who lost parents in New York on September 11th, 2001.
They only have four days to create a big, bright and colourful bike to help cheer up the kids this Christmas. The idea is to have a reindeer head for the front fender and antlers as handlebars. It requires more fabrication than most bikes and Mike's job is really cut out for him. It's not easy, but luckily they have their steel fabrication workshop just next door and they get to work, curling the steel, which will eventually resemble skis, for the 'sleigh'.
The chopper's seat is larger than normal - made to accompany Santa and his helper (that'll be Paul Snr and Mikey!). After a bit of work, and the usual fiasco involved with producing a bike in such a short timeframe, the seat rail eventually fits. Together with a few fabricated curled rails, the Santa bike finally starts to come together.
Nothing changes in this episode - it's all hands on deck as usual and Mikey decides to spend time decorating a Christmas tree rather than helping out the rest of the team. Paul Snr isn't happy and threatens to burn the tree, including the decorations, out the back of the shop. Even when he finds something constructive to do, Mikey still manages to make a messy job of the handlebars and requires help from his father!
After the extensive fabrication work, all that's left to customise is the powder coating and chrome work before the bike can finally be constructed. The reindeer fender looks fantastic and the sky is the limit when it comes to decorating the tank and the rest of the bike with everything from candy canes to snowflakes. It's not the usual look for a Orange County chopper, as Paul Jnr likes to point out, but this bike is a bit special as it is all about bringing a bit of cheer to those children who have been through so much.
If you are into electrics, this is the episode for you. The wiring is the most complicated on any of the bikes so far. There are as many lights as on your Christmas tree at home. In the words of the American Chopper guys themselves: "It's like a real life cartoon".
Once the presents are wrapped, Paul Snr has managed to squeeze into his Santa costume, and Mikey is dressed up like an elf, all is ready to treat the girls and boys down at the Montgomery Fire Department. The children love the bike and the boys really manage to spread a bit of Christmas cheer to those who have been through so much pain since losing a parent in the Word Trade Centre tragedy in 2001. |
